The Chemex is a hand-drip coffee maker made from borosilicate glass and designed to brew coffee using a paper filter. It was invented in 1941 by Peter Schlumbohm, a German chemist who immigrated to the United States. He wanted to create a coffee maker that would brew premium coffee while being easy to use.
The Chemex became popular in the 1950s and 1960s due to its ease of use and ability to produce clean, clear coffee. It is often used to make filter coffees for groups of people, as it can hold up to 8 cups of coffee at a time.
The method of preparation of the Chemex is quite simple. Here are the steps to follow:
Preheat the Chemex by filling it with hot water.
Fold the filter paper into a v-shape and place it into the stem of the Chemex. Make sure the folded sides point towards the handle.
Pour hot water over the filter to rinse and activate the paper.
Pour the ground coffee into the filter, using about 30g for 8 cups of coffee.
Pour hot water using a spiral pour technique to cover all the ground coffee.
Wait for the water to pass through the ground coffee and fill the Chemex.
Remove the filter and discard the used ground coffee.
Pour the coffee into cups and serve immediately.
It is important to note that the proportions of coffee and water may vary depending on personal taste and strength preferences. It's also important to choose premium coffee and grind it just before using it for best results.
